Dogs The most popular breed of dog is the Labrador Retriever. The most expensive breed of dog to keep is the St. Bernard. A mongrel is generally more robust than a pedigree, and is much cheaper too. Mongrels can be known as another name, such as mixed or cross breed, random-bred, or mutts. Really, the term ‘cross breed’ should only be used if the mother and father were both from different pedigree breeds. Mixed breeds have ancestors from different breeds, and most mongrels look very different from each other. Most mongrels are from unwanted litters or found in rescue homes, although there are some mixed breed dogs who have been specially designed. Because mongrels have an indiscriminate past, it is difficult to predict their temperament, but almost any dog with the right handling, training, patience and love can has the potential to be a well-behaved and happy dog. There is even an alternative to Crufts for non-pedigree dogs, called "Scruffts".
